On April 22, 2013, we announced that we had been selected to receive a grant of up to $6.4 million from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as part of an innovative pilot-scale biorefinery project related to the production of military fuels. We’ll be using renewable carbon dioxide, lignocellulosic sugars and waste heat through our Grower Harvester technology platform, and as part of this exciting project, we will team up with two partners who will help make it all possible. We would like to congratulate Sweetwater Energy and Elevance Renewable Sciences and we look forward to working with each of them on this project.
Sweetwater Energy uses a patented, decentralized technology to produce low-cost sugars from non-food plant materials. For the project, we will feed Sweetwater’s cellulosic sugar to our algae to convert to high-quality advanced biofuels. Sweetwater produces sugars for a wide variety of applications and can optimize their sugars for our technology.

Elevance Renewable Sciences
As part of our project proposal, we have also teamed up with Elevance, who intends to convert our algal oils into a combination of aviation and diesel fuels for military jets and ships. Elevance was selected based on their low-cost operating technology that’s been demonstrated at commercial production and their ability to work with algal oils. While Elevance continues to focus on developing high-performance molecules for high-value specialty chemical markets, using metathesis technology to convert algal oils into drop-in biofuels presents an opportunity to demonstrate the robust market and feedstock options available to the Elevance technology platform.
