BioProcess Algae: Update

Posted by Sasha Forsen on Thu, Oct 31, 2013 @ 02:01 PM

Yesterday, Green Plains, our joint venture partner, had their third quarter 2013 financial results conference call. On the call, Green Plains CEO Todd Becker gave an update on our algae facility that is co-located with the Green Plains Shenandoah ethanol plant. Here is what Todd reported on in the call:

  • Retrofit of Grower Harvester biorecators has been completed with solid yield improvements.
  • We are now growing algae autotrophically in final growth phase for increase yields without sunlight. This is combined with main output for growth (CO2, warm water and waste heat); a mixotrophic process.
  • A fermentation tank will be installed this week inside the Shenandoah ethanol plant where algae will be fed waste sugars from the ethanol process.
  • DOE scope is being finalized to determine what the platform will look like in 2014 and 2015.
  • We are focusing on product development efforts in nutraceuticals, fish meal, fish oil replacement, and different uses in human nutrition.
  • We have hired a new VP of business development who will work to secure strategic partners and customers.
  • We have produced 21 tons of dried biomass since ramped up production last year.
  • Product is being shipped out this week for fish meal trials.

BioProcess Algae and Green Plains Host Conference Tour

Posted by Sasha Forsen on Mon, Sep 16, 2013 @ 04:45 PM

This past week, BioProcess Algae and Green Plains hosted a tour of our algae and ethanol facilities and how the two work side-by-side. The group was split up in two. While half of the group toured BioProcess Algae led by our CEO Tim Burns, the other half got to check out the ethanol production process with tour guide Ryan Brock, Green Plains Shenandoah Lab Manager. Then after the groups toured their first facility, they switched to the other.

We had a great time! We had a lot of interested parties from various companies and industries and they came equipped with lots of questions. We were very excited to show all of the innovative happenings going on in Shenandoah, Iowa.

The tour was part of the National Advanced Biofuels Conference & Expo that was held this year in Omaha, Nebraska. Tim Burns, our CEO, had the opportunity to present and talk algae with the conference attendees.

You can find out more about the conference here.
